![]() Anywhere else would consider you a Shodan, so if your gonna quit there's usually no reason to stay longer unless your goal is Nidan, because nowhere else would consider Shodan-ho and Shodan different. At my school it was considered a full black belt, solid belt and everything, but you they just didn't consider you "one of them" yet (not exactly what I mean but I couldn't think of a better way to put it). But if your goal is to keep training and stuff then prove it to us before we acknowledge you as a black belt of our dojo. I think they put in this system as a kind of filter, like, if all you want is your black belt then here you go, Shodan-ho. Everyone was really happy for him and stuff, welcoming him as a new blackbelt of the dojo, and he suddenly said he was quitting because all he wanted was to earn his black belt and now he was done. My instructor liked to tell stories, and one I heard a lot talked about a guy who was super into karate and got his black belt at the dojo. But until then you had to prove yourself. One you got Shodan you'd be considered a full black belt, and at our dojo the tradition would be to get an embroidered belt then as a symbol of that. The only dojo I have personally seen that actually uses it is the one I trained at up to, coincidentally, Shodan-ho.Īt this school, the rank was a sort of probationary period where you were supposed to prove you were interested in sticking with karate even after earning your black belt. At least a few places I've been didn't even recognize the term. In my experience the ranking isnt too common, at least not in my area in the styles I practice. I'm curious how many other people go to a school that use this rank and what your opinion of it is. I've done a little research online and understand that shodan-ho is a provisional shodan ranking, which not all karate schools use. We test every 6 months, so in either 6 months or 1 year from now (depending on how I do) I will test again for shodan and, if I pass, I'll get the solid black belt. I'm very happy with my shodan-ho rank and my black belt with the red stripe in the middle. The test was one of the most difficult cardio workouts of my life and I had to spar against several shodan students, but I passed. I knew there were some kids wearing a black belt with a red stripe in the middle, which was between ikkyu and shodan, but I thought maybe it was something just for the kids who weren't old enough for a shodan's solid black belt. Previously, I was ikkyu and wearing a solid brown belt. It wasn't until the day of the test that I filled out some paperwork and realized I was actually testing for a rank called shodan-ho. I made a post a little while back, excited that I was finally testing for shodan.
